LIGHT | LYS

With the Nordic art project LIGHT / LYS , Thomas Iversen (NO), Nynne Hoe and Ane Fabricius Christiansen aims to explore the light and colour properties of local Norwegian geological materials collected from the Oslo and Bamble provinces which are rich in rare minerals and natural stone.

Through research, fieldwork, ceramic experiments, and professional exchange, the trio investigates the region's fluorescent minerals with the goal of generating new knowledge, experiences, and approaches to how we develop, exhibit, and experience art created from geological materials.

The project will be presented at Kunsthall Grenland in Porsgrunn in September to November 2026. LIGHT / LYS acts as an extended field of vision, revealing the incredible properties of minerals that surround us, but which we are usually unable to see or experience. The group's ambition is to invite audiences into a darkened, immersive exhibition that appeals to the body and senses – sending the imagination on a journey to the depths of the ocean, the Earth's interior, and further into the vastness of outer space.

To the trio´s knowledge, no prior artistic work has focused specifically on fluorescent minerals, so we are gathering and developing the necessary knowledge and expertise ourselves. In this process, the Natural History Museum in Oslo and local geological experts are valuable partners.
The aim for the project is to inspire a wider field and open up new possibilities and ways of thinking within the intersection of art, geology, and sensory experience.

The research and field trips in May and September 2025 are supported by the Danish Arts Foundation.
